This book is the history of the entire length of Bayou Bartholomew in southeast Arkansas and Morehouse Parish Louisiana. It is over 600 pages long and contains 94 old photos.
The first part, the historical section, describes the source, how the old Arkansas River once occupied the bayou bed, archeology, the colonial period, histories of early bayou settlements (see table of contents) and nearby hill settlements, steamboating, overland travel, fords, ferries, bridges, floods, slavery, Civil War, Reconstruction, timber industry, agriculture, law and order, wild game, hunting, the bayou as a recreational and cultural site, and ecological concerns.
Part Two contains family histories of the 64 interviewed plus 36 additional ones submitted by others or compiled by the author.
