Old Times Not Forgotten:

A History of Drew County

By Rebecca DeArmond

Log House Built about 1837

The past has been recaptured and brought to life in this animated and spirited history of Drew County, Arkansas. Rebecca DeArmond has presented a realistic picture of "life as it was" during settlement days, rendered not only with authenticity, but also

with heartwarming stories which reflect the struggle, pathos, and fun of the settlers.
Emphasis is on the people and their use of the natural resources of the country. The reader may laugh and he may cry, but he will certainly gain a respect for a land once a wilderness and for the people who made it "home."
The book is divided into two major sections. The first is a social history of the county that covers such topics as courtship and marriage customs, home remedies, ghost stor ies, railroads, moonshine, and the founding of Monticello, the county seat.

The second part is an extensive collection of over 500 family histories containing the names of thousands of Drew County residents of the 19th and 20th centuries. This se ction is invaluable to those interested in genealogy. Post offices, cemeteries and additional genealogies are listed in appendices.

Much of the book is based on taped interviews with 160 county residents that uncovered a great store of previously unrecorded local history. Old Times Not Forgotten : A History of Drew County is a model county history with a rare combination of interesting reading and reference. This book will be a valuable addition to the family bookshelf, libraries, and genealogists alike.

The 418 page volume is bound in hard cover with a dust jacket and contains 45 old photographs as well as photographs of those interviewed during the research period, and is the result of a two-year community service project sponsored and funded by the Commercial Bank and Trust Company of Monticello. The writing and publishing phase of the project was partially funded by the Arkansas Endowment for the Humanities. A separate index to family names is now available.
