Commission opposes animal cruelty act

LITTLE ROCK - Commissioners from the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission came out in opposition to Initiated Act 1, more commonly known as the Animal Cruelty Act, in today’s monthly meeting. The commission noted several concerns about the proposed amendment that will be on the November ballot.

Commission chairman Jim Hinkle said that the agency feels there are too many problems with the proposed law. “Certain groups that are supporting this act are on record as wanting to eliminate hunting and fishing in Arkansas,” he said. “Additionally, there are too many loopholes in the act, which may make judicial interpretation problematic,” he added.

Hinkle also noted that Arkansas already has an existing statute that addresses animal cruelty issues. “If changes are needed, this issue should be addressed by the legislature,” he stated.

Commissioners are joining a coalition of organizations to oppose the act. The coalition includes the Arkansas Cattleman’s Association, Arkansas Forestry Association, Arkansas Pork Producers, Catfish Farmers of Arkansas, Delta Waterfowl, Poultry Federation and the Farm Bureau of Arkansas, among others.
