I shoot a model 81 Browning in 30:06. This is the
early version, straight stock, steel receiver, 22 inch barrel. I
shoot 220 gr nosler partitions. The rifle has a
peep sight and is used on my mountain trips as a saddle gun. I
hunt the west, primarily for elk, bear and deer in that
order. This rifle has proven itself to be tough in all
weathers. I have hunted during snow storms (I don't
recommend doing that) and had no malfunctions. Freezing
weather has never caused a malfunction. This rifle
has taken large and small bull elk, several bucks and one
exceptional black bear. I don't shoot over 250
yards, hence the iron sights and limited trajectory of the 220
grain bullet. I don't go into the mountains with
any other rifle. It is totally adequate for the rough and tumble
of
horse hunting. Reliable, functional, maybe a little
ugly. Gets the job done. I chronographed my handload at
2640 feet per second at the muzzle. It prints 3
inches high at 100 yards. I am totally satisfied with this rifle.
